The proper method
Descartes was born in 1596 in a town that’s now named after him, just south of Tours in France. He was instructed by Jesuits and received a thoroughly Scholastic education, but emerged unsatisfied. The teachings of the Jesuits “contained no point that was not disputed and hence doubtful.” Doubt bothered Descartes. He would have hated sitting through a Scholastic disputation. You can think of his philosophy as an attempt to be free of doubt, and to secure, once and for all, certain knowledge of the world.
